Telangana's power crisis to continue through upcoming summer

Written by : TNM

The News Minute | January 17, 2015 | 8:45 am ISTTelangana may have to brace itself for long power outages again with the sudden increase in power demand in the ongoing Rabi season and the stoppage of hydel power generation at the Nagarjuna Sagar from the end of January. The government has also asked for a power cut schedule to enable the supply of seven hour power to agriculture under the present power crisis. It is estimated that the power demand will be increased from the present 128 MU to 140 MU (Million Units) per day in February. Stoppage of power generation at Nagarjuna Sagar hydel power station due to depleting water levels in reservoirs has only worsened the situation.Though KCR and his ministers have made big promises to make Telangana a power surplus state, everything including the MoU with the Chhattisgarh government is still on paper.Even if the Dabhol power plant supplies its share of power to Telangana, there is no likely chance that the power crisis would be solved before the end of this summer, before May.TweetFollow @thenewsminute
