The Hyderabad police arrested three women on Friday, after one of them sold her three-month old baby boy for Rs. 10,000 in Secunderabad.

With the help of two other women, G Kavitha, sold her child due to financial problems when her husband was away.

The incident came to light after kavitha’s husband Raju filed a complaint against his wife.

“She (Kavitha) went to the Secunderabad railway station to abandon the child. But, there she met a woman named M Sumalatha, who asked her what her problem was. Sumalatha suggested that she sell the baby,” Inspector G. Ramesh told Deccan Chronicle.

Sumalatha then contacted T Anjali, who did not have children. Soon, the couple Anjali and her husband T Ramesh, agreed to buy the child.

“Sumalatha took them to Bellampalle town where the baby was sold to her (Sumalatha’s) relative, Anjali, who has no child though married for 14 years. Anjali paid Kavitha Rs 10,000,” Inspector T Laxmi Narayana of Tukaramgate police station told Indian Express.

According to the Times of India, when Raju, a labourer,  returned home after a week, he asked about their son. After questioning, Kavitha confessed that she had sold their child to a couple.

Based on Raju’s complaint, the police registered a case under Section 23 and 81 of the Juvenile Justice Act (JJA) and retrieved the baby from Anjali’s house.

In December last year, a similar incident took place in the city, when two women were arrested, after one of them tried to sell her newborn son for Rs 50,000 at Gandhi Hospital.

Jyothi tried to sell her baby, after she was abandoned by her husband after her pregnancy.

In November, a family planned to sell a 4-day-old baby girl for Rs.20,000, as she was the third girl child in the family.

"Since this is the third baby girl, there is no reason to celebrate," the grandmother had told NDTV at the time.

However, the baby girl’s aunt lodged a complaint and the deal was cancelled.
