Hyderabad Osmania University teacher arrested for stalking US woman online

With the increase in user-friendly online technologies, cyber crime in Hyderabad is on the rise, with another case being reported. 

Manohar David Mathews, a 34-year-old teacher from Osmania University was arrested on Friday for stalking and harassing a woman research scholar from University of California online.

On October 7, the victim lodged a complaint with the Cyberabad police from California, USA alleging that Mathews was sending her emails claiming to be her lover and that he wanted to get physically intimate with her.

Asst. Commissioner of Police, S Jayaram said, “They were in contact through mails as classmates, but after she moved to USA in 2013, he started sending her highly objectionable and lewd content.”

She had warned him several times before lodging the complaint, asking him not to send such emails. She also told him that she was married and was not interested in him.

In 2007, Mathews, who was studying MPhil at the university, met the victim at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) when she was doing her Masters in French language. 

“We have registered a case under section 354 (D) of IPC which is cyber stalking and Section 66 (C) of IT act,” said Jayaram.

In 2016, as many as 210 cases of cyber crime have been registered in Hyderabad till August. Cyberabad has accounted for 138 of these cases.
