Motorists in Hyderabad might need to think twice before stepping out without a helmet as the police will ensure strict implementation of the rule from Tuesday.

The police also added that they would file chargesheets against motorists driving without a licence from Wednesday.

A report in the Times of India adds:

Explaining the enforcement strategy , Hyderabad DCP , Traffic-II, AV Ranganath, said that motorists caught riding without a helmet for the first time would be fined Rs 100 and counselled at the local traffic police station (PS). For the second offence, the fine would increase to Rs 200. However, from the third offence, Rs 300 fine would be imposed and the erring motorists would have to undergo a day-long counselling session at the Traffic Training Institute (TTI) in Goshamahal.

Earlier, the Hyderabad high court said that the steps taken by Telangana and AP over the implementation of the helmet rule were not satisfactory, and gave the governments three weeks to make it compulsory.

According to a report in Deccan Chronicle, the bench referred to the effective implementation of the helmet rule in cities like Delhi and Mumbai, and asked both the states launch special drives and take action, including booking of cases and cancellation of licence of those who ride two-wheelers without helmet.
