Beer truck topples in Telangana, locals grab bottles and run

Written by : TNM Staff

Locals in Telangana’s Nalgonda district were in for a surprise ‘party’ on Thursday, when a truck carrying several beer cartons, swerved near Vemulapalli village’s Shettipalem junction, to dodge an animal that had wandered on the road.

The accident toppled the truck, thereby spilling hundreds of beer bottles on the street.

The Hindu reported that locals initially rushed to the spot to rescue the driver, but soon realised that he had escaped with no injuries. Chaos followed, as people began picking up the beer bottles of their choice and took away as much liquor as they could possibly carry.

On receiving information about the accident, the local police rushed to the location and guarded the bottles that were remaining after the incident. The bottles were later reloaded onto another vehicle, and sent to the original destination, The Hans India reported.

Additionally, more than half the beer bottles in the truck were broken on impact, due to which shattered pieces of glass on the road caused a huge inconvenience to commuters on the stretch.

The loss from the spillage and the looting by locals was estimated Rs 50,000, the police said.

The Hindu quoted local SI, Rajasekhar Reddy saying, “There was an initial frenzy, but we contained the situation soon.”

The truck was reported to be transporting the beer to Huzur Nagar in Suryapet district from Nalgonda district, where it was brewed.
