In a tragic incident, three migrant labourers were buried alive in a mudslide in Telangana's Sangareddy district.

According to reports, the workers, who hailed from Odisha, had been employed to lay an underground drain pipe for a private school in Velimela village in the district.

The Ramchandrapuram police, which is investigating the case, said that the labourers were identified as 20-year-old Manas Sahu, Prakash Manik (21) and Vikas Manik (20).

The workers who survived the mishap have alleged that the school management did not provide them with any safety equipment, even though they had to dig a 3.5 metre deep trench, to lay the pipe.

As they were carrying out the work, a large amount of mud began sliding and fell into the pit, burying them at the spot.

The other workers immediately called for help and rushed the trio to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared them brought dead. 

The bodies of the deceased were later sent to a government hospital for post-mortem. 

In another related incident that took place in Telangana’s Jagtial district, three women workers were killed and six others injured when a mound of mud fell on them at Kustapur village.

Reports suggest that lack of safety measures may have led to the deaths of the workers, who were covered under National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).

The news of the deaths reached Jagtial Collector A Sharath, who suspended NREGA officials responsible for overseeing the work and ordered Joint Collector B Rajesham to launch an investigation into the incident.

Stating that the incident occurred due to negligence on the part of NREGA officials, the Collector said that a detailed probe would be carried out.

He also assured that compensation would be given for the kin of the deceased and for treatment of the injured.
