The Tamil Nadu Government moved the Supreme Court against the Madras High Court’s decision to have CISF security cover in the court premises at Chennai and Madurai.

The Government claimed that the state is capable of handling the security of the court, better than any Central force.

The restrictions on the state police were ordered after a clash in the court campus between advocates and police on October 29, 2009.

Tamil Chief Secretary told TOI, “Had the administrative restraint been lifted, the state police authority would be in a better position to give better security than any central force on the high court campus.”

The High Court had ordered the deployment of CISF personnel in the court campus from November 16, 2015 on Friday. This decision was taken in suo moto proceedings on September 14 after the lawyers staged protest demanding Tamil to be an additional official language in Madras High Court, according to NIE report.

The petition by the Tamil Nadu State Government stated, “It is not open to the high court to take away the powers of the state and entrust it to the central security. It would amount to encroachment of the powers of the government by another wing of the State -Judiciary,” as stated in TOI.

It also said that the central forces deployment will also create jurisdictional issues and it would worsen the situation due to non-familiarity with the local language.
