The News Minute | March 23, 2015 | 04.50 pm ISTAs political parties demand a CBI probe into the suicide of an assistant engineer in the agriculture department in Tirunelveli, more details in the death which resulted in the resignation of agriculture minister SS Krishnamurthy have emerged.The engineer’s suicide was allegedly blamed on pressure from Krishnamurthy and his colleagues to recruit some persons for the post of drivers. However, according to the Indian Express, the district collector admitted that Muthukumaraswamy had approached him a few days ahead of his death to complain about pressure from the minister’s secretaries.One former colleague who had met Muthukumaraswamy in Chennai a week before his death said that he had alleged that the he was in trouble over appointing seven drivers to the department, according to the report. The minister’s office had allegedly demanded a sum of Rs 14 lakh (2 lakh from each driver). If the money was failed to be given, alterations would be made to the list for the job that paid Rs 9,000 a month. Muthukumaraswamy who was supposed to retire this year also allegedly told that the ministers’s secretaries had threatened him that he would not be allowed to retire unless he paid up. Considering withdrawing Rs 6 lakh from his PF to pay up, he was told by the minister's office to cough up the entire amount. It was then that Muthukumaraswamy had approached the District Collector for help twice.
