Saving Chennai's beaches: City Corporation promises to act sensibly

The officials have decided to scrap projects that it had planned on the beaches of Chennai. The Mayor of Chennai Saidai Duraisamy assured the environmental activists that the projects proposed on eastern part of the beaches will be scrapped, The Hindu reported.The projects included development of walkways and the creation of benches, a gallery, bicycle track, concrete roads, rainwater trenches and street light fittings. The Coastal Resource Centre had on Wednesday released a report which had accused the corporation of encroachments to the tune of 14 acres.Read - Are Chennai’s beaches being destroyed by its own city Corporation? The fishermen had also resisted the implementation of a beautification projects in Neelangarai, Kottivakkam and Palavakkam.Meanwhile few DMK councilors on Thursday filed a complaint against the Mayor alleging “abuse” and “misuse” of official position and lodged a complaint with the Home Secretary and DGP demanding action.
