The News Minute | March 13, 2015 | 08.30 am ISTA rape survivor’s personal narrative in a Chennai court against an accused may have made all the difference in convincing the court in rejecting his bail plea.Making a strong case against the accused, the rape survivor’s decision to oppose the bail plea in court could set a new precedent for such cases wherein the affected themselves make a strong case against the perpetuators.Shanthi(name changed), aged 21, had filed a complaint against Suresh . Suresh from Teynampet had been a school dropout , while Shanthi , a commerce graduate worked in a private company, reported Times of India.When Shanthi planned on opening a savings bank account, Suresh posed as a bank employee and collected her application, said the report. According to the prosecution, the two started talking and soon became friends, and after cajoling her into visiting his residence, he then had forcible sex with her and recorded the act on his mobile phone.Blackmailing her that he would upload it on the internet, he raped her several more times, said the report. It was after Shanthi became pregnant that she approached the police and an FIR under three sections ( cheating, punishment for rape and criminal intimidation) was filed. He was arrested on February 25. However, when Suresh filed a bail application stating that he was innocent and was ready to marry her, she herself appeared in court stating that if he was let free he would continue to commit similar crimes.
