Madras High Court on Thursday dismissed the petition to convert former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa residence ‘Veda Nilayam’ into a memorial.  

The bench consisting Justice Hulwadi G. Ramesh and Justice R Mahadeven dismissed the petition stating that a similar petition has been filed at the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court which was also dismissed.

This petition comes even as several people online have been calling for the house to be converted into a memorial.

The petition was filed by Parthiban from Saidapet. He said that while Veda Nilayam was being used by AIADMK leaders, and the residence of former Chief Ministers Kamaraj and MG Ramachandran were transformed into memorials. He added that former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam had also promised to make Jayalalithaa’s house into a memorial.  

Panneerselvam’s promise came last week, after he broke away from Sasikala’s faction. “This is the first step of the struggle to declare it a memorial. We will ensure that the residence is converted into a memorial for late Amma so that lakhs of people can come and relive their memories about the late leader,” he reportedly said.  He had also added that all the books belonging to Jayalalithaa will be put on display at the memorial.
