Greenpeace India given show-cause notice by Tamil Nadu government

 Tamil Nadu government has sent a show-cause notice to Greenpeace India, and threatened cancellation of the organisation’s registration over issues related to its operations.According to claims made by the NGO,  following an inspection of the office in Chennai on June 3 by the Registrar of Societies of the TN government, a notice dated June 16 was issued , reported PTI.Following this, Greenpeace India issued a statement saying, "Greenpeace India has been sent a show-cause notice threatening cancellation of the NGO's society registration due to questions over its operations and funding”.We are confident about proving without doubt that we have acted within law, said Divya Raghunandan, the programme director, Greenpeace India, according to the report.The notice comes on the heels of an inspection by investigators belonging to the TN government which the organisation claimed was a move to shut it down. According to an earlier report, the officials refused to give in to their request for an inspection in writing. They instead told Greenpeace that they were checking into the organisation’s society status.In an earlier statement, the organisation said: "Greenpeace India is a charity, and thus should be exempt from most taxes. But the government has chosen to retrospectively remove its tax exemption on a number of items.”
