A spurt in the sale of beer and liquor has been reported this election season in Tamil Nadu. Taking note of this, the election commission has stated that it will enquire into the increased sales.

Beer sales alone have increased by 37 percent while other alcoholic beverages saw a 7 per cent rise in sales. Speaking to reporters on Monday, TN CEO Rajesh Lakhoni said the election commission had restrained bulk sales of liquor in the state owing to the ongoing Assembly elections and has also ordered the closure of Tasmac outlets throughout Tamil Nadu for four days from May 14 to May 19.

Strict action would be taken on those indulging in bulk purchase from May 12 and even on individuals who hoard the liquor, he said. 

"An individual could possess four full bottles at home and if we get information of hoarding we will raid the premises and take action," Mr. Lakhoni added.

The state has received about 300 companies of paramilitary forces and the personnel would be deputed to various districts in the state to provide security during the poll and also during the counting of votes.
