DMK to protest 'political meets' of Governor with district officials, says Stalin

DMK leader MK Stalin on Thursday said the party will hold peaceful protests against Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit in districts where he goes for review of development works.

In a statement in Chennai, Stalin said Purohit should stop his political work of reviewing projects in various districts and order Chief Minister K Palaniswami to prove his government's majority in the Assembly.

Stalin's statement came after Purohit met officials of the cyclone-hit Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts. He earlier held meetings with district officials of Coimbatore and Tirupur, Stalin said.

On November 20, a statement from the Governor's office quoted Purohit as saying that his recent review meeting with officials of Coimbatore was within the framework of the Constitution and he would continue to hold such meetings.

"There was no attempt to short-circuit the official channels or force a meeting," the statement said. "While conducting such meetings, the Governor never violated any law or the constitution," the Raj Bhavan said.

Meanwhile, in another development, several thousand-people belonging to fishermen's families in Kanyakumari protested at the district's Kuzhithurai railway station on Thursday, demanding prompt action in tracing the fishermen caught in sea due to cyclone Ockhi.

"Members of nine fishing villages in Kanyakumari district are protesting on the Kuzhiturai railway station tracks. The people are steadfast and want to continue to protest till there is some concrete information about the missing fishermen," John Leonard, President, Neithal Ezhuchi Peravai, told IANS over phone from Nagercoil.

"Though the government has been saying the missing fishermen are in Maharashtra, Kerala and Lakshadweep, but they are not allowed to call their homes. The officials in those states could at least send a list of fishermen with their names and the villages they hail from in Tamil Nadu here so that the family members are put at ease," Leonard added.
