Chennai remains calm, but 16 die in aftermath of Jayalalithaa conviction

The News Minute | September 29, 2014 | 08:16 am ISTChennai remained calm on an overall; however, at least 16 people have died in the aftermath of AIADMK Chief J Jayalalithaa’s conviction in the Rs. 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case on Saturday.While one AIADMK supporter committed self-immolation, another died in front of a bus. Three people hung themselves and another died after consuming poison. Cardiac arrest was another reason for the deaths with 10 people dying of it, said The Times of India. Two others attempted self-immolation, one of whom was a Class XII student. Another AIADMK supporter cut off his litte finger in Tirupur , said the report. ( Gopalapuram )After sporadic violence on Saturday in Chennai and other areas, eight special police companies and 2,500 armed police were deployed in the city, said The Hindu. Many commercial establishments resumed service on Sunday, but transport services were hit which put the public at inconvenience, said the report. Gopalapuram, where DMK chief Karunanidhi lives, was calm with heavy police personnel guarding the area.
