Chennai lawyer slams contempt charges against HC judge CS Karnan

A Chennai-based advocate E G Rejendran has filed an application in Supreme Court for contempt proceedings against Madras High Court judge CS Karnan.

Advocate Rejendran has filed an application asking Supreme Court “not to allocate any judicial work to Justice Karnan and transfer him out of the HC before things go out of control“. He also mentioned that on September 25, CS Karnan had sent a letter SC middle income group legal aid society accusing the advocate of “false and baseless” charges, according to TOI report.

“The intervenor (Rejendran) submits that it is a defamatory statement. Justice Karnan has sent the letter only to coerce and threaten me to withdraw the petition filed by me before the Supreme Court. The action of Justice Karnan amounts to interfering with the judicial proceedings before the Supreme Court. This amounts to criminal contempt of court,” he told The Times of India.

Earlier this year, Justice CS Karnan had threatened to file contempt of court proceedings against Chief Justice Sanjay K Kaul blaming him of interfering in his judicial work and asking a CBI probe into alleged forged educational qualification of another HC judge.

Karnan had also threatened that he will tell the National Commission on Scheduled Castes to start an investigation against the chief justice for harassing him and also threatened to file a case under the provisions of SC/ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act.

For this, the Madras High Court had gone to the Supreme Court and accused Justice Karnan of judicial indiscipline and for challenging the authority of the chief justice. The Supreme Court on May 11 stopped CS Karnan from taking any action against the Chief Justice, according to TOI report.
