The Delhi government has issued a notification to introduce the odd-even formula for vehicles in Delhi from January 1, 2016 for a period of 15 days to deal with vehicular pollution caused by nearly 9 million private registered vehicles on the road.
Though chief ministers of states and union territories have been exempted from the odd-even formula, the CM of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal is not exempted.
What Delhiites need to know
1. The plying of non-transport four-wheeled vehicles having registration number ending with odd digits (1,3,5,7,9) shall be prohibited on even days of the month i.e. (2, 4, 6, 8 and so on).
2. The plying of non-transport four-wheeled vehicles having registration number ending with even digits (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) shall be prohibited on odd days of the month i.e. (1, 3, 5 ,7, 9 and so on).
3. These restrictions will apply to non-transport four-wheeled vehicles bearing any state registration between 8 am and 8 pm.
4. The restrictions will not be applicable on Sunday and violation of this rule will attract a fine of Rs 2000.
Who have been exempted from the the formula?
a) Women-only vehicles
b) Vehicles driven / occupied by handicapped persons
c) Vehicles used for medical emergencies
d) Compressed natural gas driven vehicles, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles (these vehicles should prominently display sticker saying ‘CNG vehicle’ issued by M/s Indraprastha Gas Ltd. on the front windscreen)
e) Embassy vehicle, vehicles of SPG protectees, vehicles bearing Ministry of Defence number plate and vehicles which have a pilot / escort.
f) Emergency vehicles belonging to hospitals, fire department, prison and hearses including ambulances.
g) Enforcement vehicles i.e. vehicles of police, transport department and paramilitary forces, etc.
h) Vehicles of the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Governors of states, Chief justice of India, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha, Union Ministers, Leaders of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, CMs of states and Union Territories, Supreme Court Judges, Delhi HC Judges, Lokayukta, Lieutenant Governor and Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha.
