NIA Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tanzil was shot dead in Bijnor, UP while his wife was injured by bike-borne assailants in the wee hours of Sunday.

NDTV reports the officer and his wife were immediately rushed to the hospital in Moradabad where Mr Tanzil was declared brought dead.

"He along with his wife was returning from the wedding of his niece when two unidentified bike-borne persons stopped his car and shot at him. He was declared dead at a nearby hospital," Rajkumar, SHO, Bijnor, told PTI.

His wife sustained injuries in the attack and has been admitted to a hospital in Noida.

Initially, some media reports suggested that the officer was part of high profile terrorism related investigations including the Pathankot attacks but a senior NIA official told ANI that he was not part of the probe.

According to latest information, a DIG level officer and anti-terror squad have reached Moradabad hospital.
