Amid escalating tensions with India, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has convened a meeting of the National Command Authority, the top body overseeing the country’s nuclear arsenal, news agency Reuters reported on Saturday, May 10. According to the news agency, the Pakistan military has confirmed the development.

The National Command Authority comprises senior civilian and military officials and is responsible for making critical security and strategic decisions, including those related to Pakistan’s nuclear weapons programme.

Tensions have continued to mount between the two nuclear-armed neighbours following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and India's retaliatory strikes on Pakistan. Several security alerts have been issued across northern and western India, including airspace restrictions, red alerts in border districts, and increased military vigilance.

Civil flight operations at multiple airports have been suspended.
