Olympic medallist and former world record holder Eamon Sullivan of Australia on Wednesday announced his retirement from competitive swimming.

Sullivan, 28, withdrew from this month's Glasgow Commonwealth Games with an injury and has been told his shoulder will not hold up to the training required to prepare for the 2016 Rio Olympics, reports Xinhua.

Sullivan was the former world record holder in both the 50m and 100m freestyle. He won silver in 2008 Beijing Olympics in the men's 100m freestyle and 4x100m medley relay.

He also won bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay.
