'I am not a servant and Supreme Court is not my master': Justice Karnan

Written by : TNM Staff

Calcutta High Court judge CS Karnan, who is facing contempt of court proceedings, remains defiant and said,  "I am not an employee and the Supreme Court is not my employer. I am not a servant and the Supreme Court is not my master."

Earlier, he refused to undergo medical tests to ascertain his mental health condition. The examination was ordered by the Supreme Court.

Following his refusal to accept the Supreme Court order, Justice Karnan told India Today, " I do not require medical examination. First of all, SC didn't follow medical guidelines. If anyone has medical problems, then their guardian has to appear before concerned medical doctor. After signature of guardian is obtained, then medical treatment is carried out. Today when the concerned doctor came, he spoke with me for a few minutes and he himself said Justice Karnan is normal and asked why this order has been passed unnecessarily. "

According to reports, a four-member medical board formed by the West Bengal Health Department reached Karnan's residence, along with police officials, to execute the apex court's order. Karnan, who has been barred from carrying out his duties, however refused to undergo a medical test. He further alleged that he was harrassed and insulted on account of being a Dalit judge. He also furnished the medical authorities a written statement, elucidating why he will not allow the examination.

Even before the examiners arrived, Karnan had claimed that he was 'absolutely normal and had a stable mind'. He further claimed that, ""It's a mad order by mad judges, highly illiterate judges."

On Tuesday, Justice Karnan had passed non-bailable warrants against the seven Supreme Court judges, which included Chief Justice of India JS Kehar.

He had written to the Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister's office, the Union Law Ministry and others, accusing several top judges of corruption without 'due evidence'.
