Keerthi Prakasm| The News Minute| June 27, 2014| 7.40 pm ISTIt has been tough for little Arun Namboodiri so far, his younger sister was abused, tortured by their father and step mother, finally died this year. The “guardians” were arrested by the police immediately after his sister, Adeethi Namboothiri died.On April 30, 2013 seven year old Adeethi was declared dead by the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital authorities. Though Adeethi’s parents’ claimed that the burns in her body were because she fell in a hot tub, the hospital authorities refused to buy this story, and alerted the police. The seven year old’s post mortem reports revealed the extent to which her little body was tortured. The child’s body had marks all over; the doctors also noted that the last found food in her system was a mango, which she had eaten more than two weeks ago. The fact that the couple was torturing the two children Adeethi and her brother Arun was not a surprise to the localites. In fact they had complained to Childline authorities about the abuse, but the NGOs counselling did not help in relieving Adeethi off her plight. Both Subramaniam and wife were arrested by the police immediately after the child’s death. But, left in the lurch was Arun Namboothiri, Adeethi’s elder brother who had no one to take care of him other than his old, ailing grandmother. On Thursday, the state government decided to adopt Arun and fund his education and other needs. A financial assistance package was given to Arun Namboodiri from the Chief Minister’s relief fund.Amidst the gruesome child abuse stories from Kerala that make headlines, it is certainly a relief to see instances like this when the victims of such abuse are being responsibly taken care of by the state.
