Family of slain Congress worker Shuhaib has moved the state High Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation-led probe into his death. This comes just after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan dismissed the need for a central agency to investigate his death, claiming that the ongoing probe was enough.

Shuhaib, who was 29 years old, was hacked to death in Mattanur, Kannur. He was the Block Secretary of the Youth Congress. Five people have been arrested so far in connection with his death, two of whom are Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers.

His family also hinted at going on an indefinite strike if a CBI investigation was not ordered. Meanwhile, the United Democratic Front has also decided to approach High Court seeking a CBI inquiry.

“We have decided to approach the High Court seeking CBI probe into the murder of my son. We will move forward and we will not reverse our decision whatsoever,” Muhammed, Shuhaib’s father, told TNM.

Taking into account the gravity of the situation, Muhammed’s lawyer asked the court to consider the plea as early as possible.

The request to first conduct a CBI probe was first suggested on Monday by the Opposition in the Assembly.

However, the CM rejected this request, saying, “The police inquiry in the case was satisfactory. Action will be taken in the case without favour to anyone. The argument that those who have been booked in the case are dummy accused is baseless. The ongoing probe is just.”

The Assembly soon dissolved into chaos with members of the Opposition storming the Well of the House to register their protest.

Meanwhile, a march held by Youth Congress workers to the Secretariat turned violent, with protestors pelting stones at the police.

The police fired tear gas shell and rubber bullets in a bid to quell the crowd.

Shuhaib’s death is the latest in the long list of political murders that Kerala has witnessed in the recent past.
