Kerala: 7-yr-old boy dies after school toilet wall collapses

The Lower Primary (LP) School, Choottumali, near Thalavady, in Alapuzha on Friday witnessed an unfortunate incident when a 7-year-old boy died in the school premises when the toilet wall collapsed on him.

The deceased is identified to be Sebastian M Joseph, a class 2 student. Sebastian is the son of Joseph and Ansamma, Munduchirayil house.  

According to the officials in Edathua police station, the incident occurred around 11 AM on Friday when the boy had gone to the school toilet to relieve himself.

“The incident occurred around 11 AM. The boy had gone to the school toilet and that’s when the wall collapsed on the child. He sustained a head injury”, said Praveen, civil police officer, Edathua police station.

The boy was then taken to the nearby hospital for immediate medical assistance, but the hospital authorities confirmed that he was brought dead.

“Immediately after the incident, the boy was taken to the Thiruvalla taluk hospital by the school authorities. But it was too late, the hospital officials confirmed that the student was brought dead”, added Praveen.

Meanwhile the police officials also said that the locals have blamed the school authorities for the shabby condition of the school and its failing infrastructure. The police also informed that Sebastian's funeral will be held on Saturday at 2pm.

The Alappuzha district collector T V Anupama’s office confirmed that a report has been filed regarding the incident.

“A report has been filed by the collector’s office regarding the incident on Friday it self. Higher officials including the collector will organize a meeting soon with the concerned authorities to avoid such instances in the future. A relief fund for the family is also under discussion”, said an official from the collector’s office.

The police officials have filed a case against the school management under IPC 304 A, for causing death by negligence, in Edathua police station, Alappuzha.
