Written by : TNM

The News Minute| July 27, 2014| 4.00 pm ISTThe Kerala State Human Rights Commission has recommended to the state government that all two star liquor bars that have been closed down, should be allowed to re-open.The commission has said this based on complaints filed by bar owners and some housewives. The bar owners have been demanding a uniform policy for liquor bars in state ever since Kerala government had closed down sub-standard bars. The commission has observed that even bar owners have the right to earn their living. But the commission has now said that these bars should be allowed to re-open, the commission' s recommendation is not legally binding, a source in the government said. While bar owners have welcomed the commission's recommendation, the church in Kerala has strongly opposed it. The Catholic Bishop Council which had lead the movement against the liquor bars and exerted political pressure on the government to close down bars has taken exception to the commission's interference. A spokesperson for the Bishop's Council accused the commission of acting on behalf of vested interests who want the bars to open.
