Double tragedy: Uncle of 16-year-old victim of moral policing in Kerala commits suicide

The News Minute | March 16, 2015 | 9.30 am ISTThe maternal uncle of a girl, who became a victim of moral policing and committed suicide, on Sunday ended his life in his home in Kodungallur, Thrissur district. According to the police, Murali, 55, was mentally shattered after his niece’s death and blamed himself for not being able to stop her from taking her life. “The incident took place on Sunday evening. We have begun an enquiry, but the actual reason for his suicide is not known yet. His family members said he was depressed as the girl had died”, an officer at the Kodungallur police station told The News Minute.The officer added that the relatives found Murali hanging inside the room in his house around 4pm on Sunday.Murali’s niece Aswathy, 16, set herself ablaze on Friday after her neighbours found the teenager talking to a boy from her tuition class in her house when her parents were away.
