Admissions to K Surendran School of (Mis)translation now open in Kerala

We now have our very own Malayali versions of Mrs. Malaprop, a character made famous through Richard Sheridan’s first play ‘The Rivals’. She was someone who could turn the native lingo on its head.

If last December it was state BJP secretary K Surendran who mistranslated almost everything that PM Modi had said on his visit to Kerala, this time around we have an unnamed Left supporter who very cheerfully did the same job for CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat on her visit to Kalpetta.

The video released online soon went viral with even Brinda unable to contain her laughter hearing her translator come up with a somewhat weird interpretation of her speech. She was addressing a rally as part of the LDF election campaign for the upcoming polls scheduled to be held on May 16.

In the course of the translation, comrade Tapan Sen became Kamal Singh, words became mere sound, barefoot doctors …well…had no translation at all!

Realising that her translator’s forté lay not in words but in gaffés galore, Brinda is left with no choice but to literally act out her words, especially the ‘barefoot’ part, while our translator is seen looking behind for some ‘party’ support.
