Demonetised currency worth Rs 40,000 was found to have been set on fire in Karnataka’s Hassan district on Saturday morning. 

The incident came to light when people who were out on their morning walk noticed that a garbage mound on Gorur road had been set ablaze. Though they initially ignored it, they soon alerted the police after they noticed Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes in the garbage pile, The Times of India reports. 

The police ascertained the value of the currency at Rs 40,000 and said that miscreants must have set it on fire at night. 

“Several incidents of garbage mounds being set on fire have been reported recently… Some rag pickers even managed to take some of the old notes that had escaped the flames,” Hassan police told TOI. 

The police have reportedly sought CCTV footage from nearby shops to identify the miscreants.  

Earlier, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation, sacks of old currency were found burnt in Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh. Following this, two sacks of torn Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes were found abandoned in a posh locality in New Delhi.
