Nearly 10 lakh cases delayed as over half the judges posts in Karnataka HC remain vacant

The News Minute | December 15,2014 | 11.04 pm ISTDespite repeated requests to the state government to fill vacant posts of judges' at various High Courts in Karnataka, more than half of them still remaining vacant, reported Vijaya Karnataka.Currently of the 62 positions, there are only 30 judges available in Dharwad Bench, Kallaburagi Bench and Karnataka High Court in Bengaluru. Nearly 10 lakh cases have been delayed as a result of non-availability of required number of judges. A number of judges have been retiring over the years and simultaneously, number of new cases are also on the rise which is creating immense pressure on the present judges, reported the newspaper.This year, seven judges have retired so far and another five are expected to retire in 2015 and 2016. Since 2008, there has been no appointment of judges to the High Court. Former Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph, Chief Justice P.D. Dinakaran, Chief Justice Khehar have not appointed judges to the Karnataka High Court during their tenure.Karnataka State Bar council in March had urged the current Chief Justice to fill up the vacant posts at the earliest.
