Chief Minister Siddaramaiah could land in trouble if the Karnataka Lokayukta decides to invoke a provision in the Lokayukta Act which gives them the power to register a case against him while he is still in office.According to a Bangalore Mirror report, Justice Y Bhaskar Rao could order for a case to be registered against Siddaramaiah for not adhering to sections of the Lokayukta Act while constituting a commission of inquiry on corruption charges pertaining to Arkavathi Layout. Section 8 (2) (b) of Lokayukta Act 1984 states that the state government should mandatorily obtain the concurrence of Lokayukta or Upa Lokayukta before formation of any constitution to look into charges of corruption and misconduct. On the basis of this guideline, the Lokayukta has the power to take up a separate case, since the constitution of Justice HS Kempanna commission which has been set-up to look into Arkavathi de-notification case is in violation to the proposed section, the report said.The Lokayukta’s action is in the wake of a complaint filed by Ramamurthy Gowda in 2014, alleging that the CM has de-notified 1766.07 acres of acquired land for the formation of Arkavathi Layout.Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah is understood to have denied the allegations, calling them vague and baseless. He had submitted a detailed reply on April 22 to the Lokayukta stating that he had done no wrong in the land de-notification. The matter has been posted for the next hearing on May 25.
