The Karnataka state government has begun the process to reimburse the expenses they incurred over 12 years while handling Jayalalithaa’s Disproportionate Assets case from Tamil Nadu. The state Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra has said that while the case was transferred to the Bengaluru special court the Supreme Court had said that the Tamil Nadu government would bear all the expenses for the case, the Deccan Herald reported. He said the law and order and prison departments among others have paid the bills for handling the case and the Tamil Nadu government has not repaid them thus far. The neighbouring state will also have to pay for the Special Public Prosecutor who was appointed by the government. A report by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) will be sent to the Tamil Nadu government stating the amount to be reimbursed. DPAR had formerly made a report placing the expenditure of the Karnataka government between Rs 3 crore and Rs 4 crore. But the report was shelved as the officials had made some calculation errors. The two cases against J Jayalalithaa and four others were transferred by the Supreme Court in November 2003 from Chennai’s special court to a special court in Bengaluru. Speaking about whether the government would approach the Supreme Court regarding the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s verdict acquitting her, he said the state would decide after seeking Advocate General Ravivarma Kumar’s opinion.
