The News Minute | October 14, 2014 | 2.15 pm ISTThe ruling Congress government in the state has decided to change the name of Belgaum to Belgavi, but the central government’s approval is needed for the name to be changed. According a report in The New Indian Express, this is not the first time that the state government has said that it would change Belgaum’s name to Belgavi.When Dharam Singh was the chief minister the state government had sent a proposal to the union Home Ministry, asking for the names of 12 places to be changed. Approval was given to all except Belgaum, as Maharashtra too claimed Belgaum as its territory and the case was pending in the Supreme Court.The H D Kumaraswamy government too had sent a similar proposal with the same result that the proposed name change of Belgaum was rejected. With this, the entire proposal remained unimplemented.Maharashtra goes to polls on October 15 and even if it wins, it may still not give approval as the case is being heard by the Supreme Court. Members of the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) have threatened to take the matter to the central government and even approach the Supreme Court, The New Indian Express reported.
