Varalaxmi learning martial arts and silambam for trilingual film ‘Shakti’

If the industry grapevine is anything to go by, Varalaxmi will be seen performing some heavy-duty action in her upcoming trilingual film Shakti, to be directed by filmmaker Mysskin’s erstwhile assistant Priyadarshini.

Apparently, the Tharai Thappattai actress is currently undertaking classes in martial arts and silambam for the film, which is currently in its pre-production phase. It should be noted that she’s already well trained in a form of martial arts. “She has already started training and the process will take a few more weeks. She’s not completely alien to what she’s learning at the moment; however, she insisted on taking a few classes to feel really comfortable while performing action sequences,” a source from the film’s unit said. The action-thriller will be shot in a single schedule in two months flat and the regular shooting will commence from January 2018. The rest of the cast and crew is in the process of being finalised.

In this week’s release Sathya, Tamil remake of last year’s Telugu indie hit Kshanam; Varalaxmi was seen playing a police officer with negative shades. Her performance has been received well by critics and audiences alike. On the career front, she awaits the release of Vishal’s Sandakozhi 2, in which she’s rumoured to be playing the villainess. Interesting part is that the project marks the first-time collaboration of Vishal and Varalaxmi after dating each other for a few years.

Earlier this year, Varalaxmi had signed Malayalam film Aakasha Mitayee and she even commenced shooting for the project. However, she chose to exit the project in no time after she alleged crass treatment from the makers. In April this year, Varalaxmi had tweeted: "Thank you Samuthirakani sir and Jayaram sir for having supported my decision. I can't work with male chauvinists and mannerless producers." The film is the Malayalam remake of Samuthirakani’s Tamil drama Appa. She was eventually replaced by Ineya.

Varalaxmi had recently signed a yet-untitled Tamil project with Jai, and the film also stars Catherine Tresa and Raai Laxmi in leading roles. She has also started shooting for Gautham Karthik starrer Mr. Chandramouli, in which he’s sharing the screen space with his father for the first time. It’s yet unknown whether Varalaxmi is paired with Gautham in the film.
