There is a Malayali connection even to the ALS ice bucket challenge

Written by : TNM

The News Minute| September 2, 2014| 3.30 pm ISTThe ALS bucket challenge is a huge hit. It has gone viral and raked in more than 100 million dollars for the ALS Association. It now seems the ALS Association that wanted to trademark the Ice Bucket Challenge has decided to withdraw its petition. The Association says its decision comes after a slew of comments from people against such a move. But we were left wondering if that was really the reason. Could the reason be that the concept was first started elsewhere? To be precise, in 1965, when Kerala’s heartthrobs, actors Sathyan and Sheela threw a bucket of cold water on each other in the movie Chemmeen. The iconic movie based on the highly acclaimed novel of the same name by Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai which was high on romance, tells the story of a pre-marital and extra-marital relationship. In the Ice bucket scene, Sheela (Karuthamma) and Sathyan (Palani) have some fun pouring water on each other. (They use pots, more environment friendly then)We are not the first ones; manyMalayalis have floated this theory. Remember Malayalis claimed Avatar was inspired by Mohanlal’s ‘Vietnam Colony’?
