It looks like it has already been a pretty eventful week for the media behind the scenes, with several organizations and corporations taking offence. As a result, legal notices and defamation suits have made their way to the offices of several media outlets.1.) The India Today Group vs a Mumbai-based radio station:  The network has filed a civil defamation suit seeking damages to the tune of Rs 100 crore has been filed against Radio City. The channel had apparently alleged that India Today’s Rajdeep Sardesai had travelled to Montenegro in an aircraft which had been arranged for by Modi. The radio channel has given an undertaking to the court stating that it will not disseminate the offensive content and have been given time till July 28 to file their response in the court. 2.) NSE vs Moneylife: The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has filed a defamation suit seeking Rs 100 crore from Moneylife magazine. The suit comes almost a month after they reported that investors had rigged the algorithm which ended up harming several retail investors. The NSE has said that the magazine “published unsubstantiated and misleading reports against the exchange,” says a report in The Indian Express.  3.) The Caravan Magazine vs Essar: Vinod K Jose, the editor of the magazine took to Twitter to establish that the magazine had received a legal notice from lawyers at Essar. Speaking to TNM, Jose confirmed as much. “We are consulting with our lawyers, and taking a legal opinion on the matter,” he said.  The Caravan has published a series of articles related to the corporation, with the most recent one being a case of Essar gifting iPads to some of the most well-known journalists in the country. Jose confirmed that the legal notice had been served for that story. 4.) Dushyant singh vs Jairam Ramesh and Times Now: BJP's Lok Sabha member Dushyant Singh, the son of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, on Tuesday filed a defamation complaint against Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and a TV channel in a court in Dholpur. A complaint has been filed under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (which deals with punishment for defamation) against Jairam Ramesh and another complaint against Times Now in the additional chief judicial magistrate's court in Dholpur.5) Jayalalithaa vs Subramanian Swamy: The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has filed a criminal defamation complaint against the BJP leader for his tweets speculating on her health condition. Earlier she had filed complaints against Rediff.com and Nakkheeran magazine for the same.
