Pardon me: But what is vegetarian water?

Monalisa Das| The News Minute| August 2, 2014| 2.00 pm ISTVegetarians now seem have another reason to smile. The next time you go to a restaurant, and the waiter asks you for your preference of water- tap, mineral, sparkling- you can probably ask him to fetch you a glass of vegetarian water. Those wanting to quench their thirst with some vegetarian water can also avail it within the comforts of their home.An Indian home appliances manufacturer’s ad for a water purifier, which has been doing rounds for a while now, claims to do just that- filter water to a pure and vegetarian form. But what is vegetarian water?According to a company’s website, usual water purifiers kill virus, bacteria and cyst in the water by boiling or use of chemicals. But microorganisms, even though dead, still remain in the water making it non-vegetarian. However, the organisation’s purifier uses ‘Ultra filtration with hollow fibre technology’ to kill and filter out germs after killing them, thus making the water pure and vegetarian. Voila! This is an innovative technology if not anything else. However, the question is, do vegetarians view virus and bacteria through non-vegetarian glasses? Considering they are present everywhere, including inside our bodies. I am not a vegetarian, but I transform into one on certain days to please various Gods. I now sort of have an idea as to why a lot of my prayers go unanswered. And now with a purifier that gives vegetarian water, I shall start afresh.
