The News Minute| November 26, 2014| 07.09 pm ISTNo ban exists on GM crop field trials issued either by the government or the Supreme Court currently. According to environment minister Prakash Javadekar, research in GM and confined field trials must be allowed to go on, reported PTI.After a written statement stating that no ban exists on GM crop field trials by both the government or the Supreme Court, he said that a technical expert committee(TEC) has been constituted to address issues related to the same. According to him, both reports submitted by the TEC have given in recommendations to improve bio-safety regulations in India. However, of the six members of TEC, five recommended that GM crop field trials be put on hold till all suggestions were implemented, said the report.The statement comes in the wake of two RSS-linked outfits seeking ban on the field trials of the GM crops where representatives from both Swadeshi Jagran manch and Bhartiya Kissan Sangh met the minister saying that it was "not advisable" without considering its harmful effects.
