Jeyapaul of the Punjab and Haryana High Court walked by the Sukhna lake in Chandigarh on the morning of March 30, only to notice commotion and a crowd shouting for help.On noticing that a girl was drowning, the 60-year-old immediately rushed towards and dived into the lake, followed by his security officer Yashpal, who also took to the water.With the girl slowly disappearing beneath the surface of the water, both went in, with Yashpal pulling her out with the aid of Jeyapaul. The duo then proceeded to take the girl towards the bank to try and revive her. The girl, unconscious by now, was taken to a nearby hospital where she was revived. “I had been to the hospital after the incident and the girl was semi-conscious”, recalls Jeyapaul while speaking to The News Minute.The judge further added that the family of the girl was cash-strapped and had been unable to fund her education, which made her attempt suicide on that fateful morning.“I understood that the father could not afford to educate two children and chose to educate his son further. The girl, who had topped the 9th standard was devastated, and decided to commit suicide”, Jeyapaul elaborates. He further says that he spoke to the girl’s parents to convince them that education for a girl-child was equally important. “I told them that one day their daughter will become a role model for many. I promised to pay her school fees”, he says.Jeyapaul also recommended Yashpal for a cash reward and a promotion for his bravery in trying to save the young girl. “He contributed to a large extent”, adds Jeyapaul.
