A court in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district has asked a 29-year-old man to undergo a sexual potency test, after he allegedly attacked his wife with a knife and assaulted her on the first day of their marriage.

The incident took place at Motharanganapalle village in Gangadhara Nellore block, in the district, on December 1. 

The wife claimed that she was attacked, for disclosing his impotency to her parents.

The following day, the man, identified as Rajesh, a school teacher, was arrested and sent to judicial remand. 

He had been booked under sections 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“Instead of resolving the issue amicably, Rajesh resorted to physical assault on his wife ... Based on the complaint given by the woman and her parents, we booked the case and brought to the notice of the court about his impotency. The court has ordered to conduct a potency test for him,” Gangadhara Nellore sub-inspector Rajasekhar told Hindustan Times on Wednesday.

“We have not yet decided the date of conducting the tests. We will take him to Hyderabad in a day or two after consulting the lawyers and Rajesh’s family members,” he added, while speaking to HT.

According to media reports, the victim had claimed that Rajesh told her on the first night that he was not fit for marital life, and wanted the marriage to satisfy his family, and their 'reputation'.

When the victim heard this, she ran out of room, only to be convinced that he may have been nervous, and sent back in.

When she entered again, Rajesh allegedly pounced on her, bit her and punched her face and sensitive parts. 

She managed to escape, but was rushed to Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences in Tirupati, where she is still undergoing treatment.

The court has now directed the police to conduct the potency test in the presence of experienced doctors, in Hyderabad.
