After the Tamil Nadu police apprehended 22-year old Ramkumar as a suspect in the sensational Swathi murder case in Chennai, her family held a press conference in Srirangam today, where her final rites were performed. In a statement, the family thanked the police for tracking down and nabbing the killer within a week’s time. Friends of the family, public, media were also thanked. Calling for capital punishment to be awarded to the killer, the family was clear that nothing short of death penalty must be given. The Madras High Court’s suo motu action in the case was also appreciated.

“Swathi’s life is a sacrifice to get the country to sit up and notice the state of safety of women in India, and we hope that no one has to go through this. We pray that her soul rests in peace," the release said, ending with a heartfelt plea.

About 12 hours after the Tamil Nadu police apprehended 22-year old Ramkumar as a suspect in the sensational Swathi murder case in Chennai, the Chennai city police divulged details about the motive of the crime at a press conference on Saturday morning.

Speaking to reporters, police commissioner TK Rajendran said that according to their investigation, Ramkumar was interested in Swathi and infatuated with her. But she did not reciprocate, and this seems to have spurred him to hack her to death.

“Ramkumar was regularly following Swathi and was interested in her. It is when he realised that it was not reciprocated, that he committed the murder,” said Rajendran.

The police have refused to share what evidence is available against Ramkumar.
