Just a day after a Coimbatore engineering college student reportedly killed himself, a first year student at Chennai’s Sairam Engineering College, was found dead in a well on the college campus on Friday.

College authorities claimed that Abinath had allegedly killed himself because he did not want to study engineering and was forced into it by his parents. The CEO of the institution said he had aspirations of becoming a doctor and was struggling with his studies, which probably prompted him to take the extreme step. The CEO added that the college management couldn’t be responsible for it.

“On Friday morning, security guards saw him sitting on the compound wall of the college and asked him to get down,“ a police officer said to The Times of India. “A short while later, he jumped into the well. Abinath seems to have been a good student, but he was from a small town and couldn't cope with the pressure in an institution in the city.“

Students charged the officials with spreading a bomb hoax to make them leave the premises so they could cover up the suicide. Police asked students from the hostel block in which Abinath stayed to stay back for the investigation.

The incident comes barely months after the students of the college protested against the management alleging that they were being subjected to harsh, ultra-conservative rules. According to The Hindu, students expressed doubts over the management’s version of Abinath’s death.
