Remove campus director, Sairam college students demand after suicide

Around 50 students of Sairam engineering college assembled at the T Nagar signal in Chennai on Saturday morning protesting against the suicide of Abhinath, a first-year student.

Police rushed to the spot and took them to the station, threatening to imprison them.

“The college hostel is run by campus director Balu, who has a reputation for ill-treating and manhandling students. Also, we weren’t told what had happened when we were asked to leave. The management told us that there was an inspection from Anna University. Also, some of us were told that there was a bomb scare. We have no faith in the college management,” said a second year student on condition of anonymity.

Students charged the officials with spreading a bomb hoax to make them leave the premises so they could cover up the suicide. Police asked students from the hostel block in which Abinath stayed to stay back for the investigation.

“By this protest, we want to make clear our demands. We want Balu, the campus director removed.  He has been ill-treating and torturing the students. Abhinath was supposed to write a supplementary exam to clear his arrears but had forgotten his ID card, because of which he was severely reprimanded. And we feel that if Balu is removed, things will get better,” said a first-year student.

Abhinath was found dead in a well on the college campus on Friday. College authorities claimed that Abinath had allegedly killed himself because he did not want to study engineering and was forced into it by his parents. The CEO of the institution said he had aspirations of becoming a doctor and was struggling with his studies, which probably prompted him to take the extreme step. The CEO added that the college management couldn’t be responsible for it.
