Even after DMDK’s announcement on going solo for the elections, CPM and DMK said on Monday that they are expecting DMDK to join their front.

Talking to the media after a meeting with district secretaries, DMK leader Karunanidhi said, “Talks are still on with DMDK, we don't know when it will materialize, still I have not lost faith on DMDK.”

"I have not lost my confidence (that DMDK would join the DMK-led front)," said Karunanidhi, whose party was among those which have persistently wooed Vijayakanth for an alliance.

Karuanidhi's announcement that talks were on with DMDK has virtually put the clock back over the question of opposition political combinations that would take on the ruling AIADMK.

Besides the DMK, BJP and four party bloc People's Welfare Front continue to woo the DMDK.

DMK has already struck an electoral deal with Congress and Muslim-dominated parties like the IUML and MMK.

He added that it is inappropriate to talk about seat sharing as the alliance is not yet finalized. The manifesto will be released soon, he added.

On the other hand, CPI Leader Mutharasan indicated a breakthrough in alliance talks between the People’s Welfare Front and the DMDK at a rally in Valluvar Kottam on Monday.

Alluding to Karunanidhi’s quip when hopes of the DMDK-DMK alliance were alive, Mutharasan declared, “We are going to eat fruit with milk. Tamil Nadu is going to witness a new political scene soon.”

MDMK general secretary Vaiko had earlier reiterated PWA’s invitation to DMDK to join their alliance for the May 16 Assembly polls. After holding the first round of seat sharing talks with CPI (M), CPI and VCK at his residence in Anna Nagar, Vaiko had said that they were hopeful of DMDK chief Vijayakanth accepting their invitation to join their alliance.
