The alleged Rs 100 crore private school approval fraud came under scrutiny after former School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was named as an accused and premises linked to him were searched. The police have alleged that money was collected through representations involving the government machinery and unregistered associations. 

Mahesh has denied wrongdoing and challenged the case in the Madras High Court. The Enforcement Directorate has also registered a money-laundering case based on the FIR.
