The Tamil Nadu government’s decision to drop the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur has opened up a larger debate on the state’s development priorities. The project, estimated to cost around Rs 20,000 crore and planned across thousands of acres, had faced sustained opposition from farmers and residents over land acquisition and its impact on agricultural and water resources. 

The TVK's decision has drawn sharp criticism from the DMK and BJP, arguing that scrapping a major infrastructure project could hurt Tamil Nadu’s industrial growth, employment and ability to attract investments.
