Kidney for sale in Tamil Nadu| Will the culprits be punished? | In Public Interest
The victims, most of them poor, marginalised and are in debt, were allegedly identified and then trafficked for their kidneys. They were promised Rs 3 to 5 lakh and taken to private hospitals across Tamil Nadu for transplants.
Despite the racket involving the hospital and the broker linked with the ruling party DMK, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian dismissed the case as a “malpractice.” The Health Department has so far identified only six victims, but local residents allege there are many more, and suggests the racket has been active for years.
In this episode of In Public Interest, Shabbir Ahmed breaks down how the racket operated, how the state’s authorisation machinery approved transplants without proper checks, and whether political links are blocking full accountability.
