In a bizarre incident that has raised concerns over safety of metro passengers and bystanders, a 24-year-old woman who was standing  underneath the elevated Ameerpet metro station to take shelter from the rain, died after a portion of the surface wall collapsed on her on Sunday.

The woman identified as Mounika, a homemaker from Kukatpally, was standing in the pedestrian zone as heavy rains were pounding the region.

A huge crowd gathered near Ameerpet Metro station premises soon after the incident. According to eyewitnesses and police authorities, the woman sustained injuries on her head as the heavy concrete block fell off from a surface wall of the station.

The sharp edge of the piece fell on Mounika’s head from a height of about nine meters. She succumbed to her injuries before she was rushed to the hospital.

Speaking to TNM, Sector Sub Inspector CH Naresh said, "The woman passenger was taking cover under Ameerpet metro station. She died as the sharp concrete block fell on her head."

He added, "We have identified her, her relatives have already reached the spot."

The woman is said to have got down from the train at Ameerpet station and was waiting beside the staircase at the ground level as it was raining.

Unexpected rain and seemingly poor quality works at metro station have claimed the life of the woman.

Meanwhile, local civil police and traffic police were placed at the Ameerpet metro station in view of the situation. Metro train services continue to operate without any hitch.

According to primary inquiries, the deceased Mounika was the wife of TCS employee Harikanth. She along with her cousin had travelled from Kukatpally to Ameerpet in Metro train. They were searching for a hostel for her cousin, who was moving to the city for higher studies.
