A 20-year-old mining engineering student in Telangana was allegedly killed by her former lecturer who had pursued a relationship with her, after the woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by her college internship supervisor.
The Godavarikhani I Town Police have arrested both the lecturer, Jetti Naveen Kumar, and the mine supervisor, Bommakanti Ravi Kumar, for the murder and sexual assault of the woman.
According to Peddapalli Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) B Ram Reddy, Naveen Kumar, a native of Garrepalli village in Sultanabad mandal, Peddapalli district, had been working as a contract lecturer at a Singareni Collieries polytechnic college in Naspur. Police said that he met the woman when she was a student there in 2022 and pursued her to enter a relationship. Naveen was reportedly married but was living separately from his wife and had told the student that he would marry her.
The woman then secured admission into Osmania University in Hyderabad and left to pursue a BTech degree in Mining Engineering. As part of an apprenticeship for her course, she went to Godavarikhani, where a mining overman and her supervisor, Ravi Kumar, allegedly harassed her and sexually assaulted her.
Police said Naveen believed she was ‘close’ with Ravi Kumar and decided to kill her. On September 12, Naveen picked her up in his car in Godavarikhani, and allegedly drove around arguing with her. He then allegedly forced her to write a false suicide note saying she was taking her life because Ravi Kumar had sexually assaulted her.
Naveen allegedly forced the woman to drink pesticide-laced water, and kept driving around after she fell unconscious without informing anyone in order to delay medical attention. Eventually, he allegedly called her parents and told them she had attempted suicide and took her home. She was admitted to a hospital and died the next day.
