A constable of the Telangana police was killed by her brother in a suspected case of caste killing in Raipole village of Ibrahimpatnam mandal, Ranga Reddy District on Monday, December 2. Nagamani (27), who belongs to the Kuruma caste (Backward Classes) was riding her two-wheeler to the Hayathnagar police station, where she was posted, when her brother Kongara Paramesh (24) allegedly rammed into her with his car. He then allegedly stabbed her multiple times, resulting in immediate death. Paramesh then fled the spot, but later surrendered at the police station and was arrested.
The police are investigating the motive behind the crime, and suspect that her inter-caste marriage and a possible property dispute could have triggered the attack. It was a month ago that Nagamani married Bandari Srikanth (28), who belongs to the Mala community (Scheduled Caste), against her family’s wishes.
Srikanth told the police that Nagamani's family was against their marriage as he belonged to a lowered caste. He also said that Paramesh has been threatening them ever since they got married. According to the first information report, Nagamani’s deceased parents had left her an acre of land. Paramesh had threatened to not give her the land and kill her because she married outside their caste.
While on her way to work on Monday, Nagamani was on a call with her husband Srikanth, when he heard some noise. He told the police, “She told me over phone that her younger brother Paramesh was trying to hit her with his car. Suddenly, the call was disconnected.”
He continued, “I immediately tried calling her back, but she did not answer. Concerned, I informed my brother Srinu, who rushed to the location and later called me back saying that Nagamani was lying dead on the road. I immediately reached the scene near the substation on the way from Rayavolu to Manneguda, where I found my wife in a pool of blood with severe injuries.”
When the police reached the spot, she was found dead. A case has been registered under section 103 (1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita by the Ibrahimpatnam police and investigation is underway.
