Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Friday, September 11, assured that fee reimbursement dues of “genuine colleges” will be cleared in phases, while institutions facing allegations of irregularities will remain under scrutiny.
Addressing the state Assembly, CM Reddy said the government would release Rs 200 crore every month from this year towards the estimated Rs 2500 crore liability. The amount, he said, would be transferred directly to students as irregularities had been detected in college accounts.
He also said the state government wanted to leverage the BJP-led Union government’s reimbursement support of 75% for ST students and 40% for SC students, which comes with conditions for direct transfers. Fee reimbursement, he stressed, was intended to support students rather than college managements.
The Chief Minister’s statements come at a time when the state’s private degree and PG colleges management association have threatened to intensify their agitation over prolonged delay in fee reimbursement. The management of private degree colleges has warned of a massive protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi if the state government fails to meet their demands.
The Chief Minister accused the previous BRS government of selectively dealing with colleges and using vigilance inquiries to pressure institutions. He questioned why college managements had not protested during the nearly decade-long accumulation of dues.
CM Revanth also said Telangana was working on a new policy designed to prepare students for a ‘rapidly changing global economy, including the impact of artificial intelligence.’ He highlighted the rise in education spending from Rs 19,093 crore in 2023-24 under the previous government to Rs 26,647 crore in 2026-27.
